The Cold war is a conflict which began at some point after the Galactic Civil War. This conflict is the main focus of the sequel trilogy. The two factions fighting each other are the First Order, the succesor state to the Galactic Empire, and the Resistance, a paramilitary organization loosely connected to the New Republic.
